The information contained in a music file's tag can be very important to some users. It takes a lot of time and patience to edit tag information, especially when there are many audio files involved. Regardless of how much time you spend specifying artists, genres, years and so on, this information may get lost or corrupted and you will have to start all over again. Tag Backup & Restore will help you protect any tags from audio files, by backing up the information in a database on your hard drive.

If you are using a Windows version, between XP and Win 7, you will not encounter any compatibility issues. You can install the program on your computer without any difficulties and it will not affect your computer's performance in any way.

You will have to load your music folder with the software's browsing option, which is located on the toolbar. Once you select the tag information from your audio files, it will be displayed in a table of contents, in the central region of the interface. You may edit any information, just like in a MS Excel spreadsheet. New columns, with additional information can be added. This requires bringing up a properties window and clicking check boxes to select one or more items.

Regardless of how much information your audio files contain, you can save it as a single file on the hard drive. The Backup option, in the upper left corner of the interface, will bring up a Save As window, where you can select the output path and format. You may save the file as an Access 2000 database (.mdb), Excel worksheet (.xlsx) or as a delimited text file (.csr).

A second toolbar, with similar options, can be found on the lower edge of the main window. You can use it to select a created database, load it and restore the contained information. Your music folder must be selected before you do this. If certain details are missing from the tags, they will be filled in automatically, immediately after clicking the Restore option.

Pros

The software will save any amount of information, from any number of tags, as a single database file. The process is straightforward and fast. Before creating a backup, you can also filter the information, edit it and more.

Cons

When using the trial version, you will encounter a nag screen before the interface is loaded, but it can be dismissed immediately. If you can not afford to lose your music collection's tag information, you can back it up with Tag Backup & Restore. It will take only a few seconds to protect countless hours of work.
